At Chiropractic Care Clinics, we often talk about looking after your body, but step outside, and you’ll see that same care and attention reflected in our garden too.
Behind it all is Bridget, our wonderful gardener, who’s been nurturing the space (and her own wellbeing) with the same thoughtful approach.
A Garden That Gives Back
Bridget joined the clinic in August 2024, and from the start, she noticed something special.
“The entire property has extremely good energy,” she says. “All of the clinic personnel are lovely, and that warmth carries into the garden itself.”
When she first arrived, the garden had been completely taken over by bindweed. But rather than seeing a problem, Bridget saw potential.
“There was something deeply satisfying about patiently clearing it and reclaiming the space, restoring order and allowing the garden to breathe again.”
Now, the garden is constantly evolving.
“Every week it offers something different – a new bloom, fresh growth, or a surprise waiting to be discovered. It truly feels alive.”
A Lifelong Love of Gardening
Bridget’s journey into gardening began back in 1985, when she was expecting her first child and wanted to create a business she could run from home.
“At that time, my gardening knowledge was almost zero,” she laughs. “But I came across a small herb nursery for sale and I became completely obsessed.”
Armed with a collection of herb books and a lot of curiosity, Bridget taught herself everything from seed sowing to propagation.
“That was – and still is – my happy place. Working quietly with nature and watching life unfold.”
Gardening Without the Aches
As any keen gardener knows, spending hours outdoors can take its toll on the body, but Bridget has learned how to work with her body, not against it.
The raised beds at the clinic make a big difference.
“They’re an absolute godsend – so much more comfortable for weeding and tending plants.”
She also uses a gardening stool to reduce unnecessary bending, and when she does need to get down low, she uses her tools for support when standing back up.
“A simple trick, but very effective. I’m sure many people do the same!”
Working Mindfully
Having had major back surgery in 2007, Bridget is especially mindful of how she moves.
“I avoid overreaching, bending from the waist, or twisting awkwardly. I try to move with awareness rather than rushing.”
She also makes a point of varying her tasks throughout the day.
“Switching between pruning, weeding, planting, and tidying helps prevent strain, especially on the hands and wrists.”
For Bridget, good tools are just as important as good technique.
“Sharp secateurs, a lightweight fork, and supportive footwear all make a difference. And of course – staying hydrated and taking short pauses.”
Her philosophy is simple:
“Gardening should feel nourishing, not punishing.”
The Chiropractic Connection
As someone who sees a chiropractor herself, Bridget understands first-hand how important it is to look after your body.
“The most valuable advice I’ve received is to be conscious of posture; bending the knees rather than the back, keeping movements controlled, and avoiding sudden twisting.”
She also swears by simple stretches before and after gardening to stay comfortable and aligned.
For Bridget, the connection between gardening and chiropractic care is clear:
“Just as a garden thrives when properly supported and maintained, so does the body.”
Regular chiropractic appointments help her stay flexible, reassured, and able to continue doing what she loves.
A Gentle Reminder
As the garden outside comes back to life this spring, it’s a great time to think about your own wellbeing too.
Whether you’re getting back into gardening or simply becoming more active, a little care and attention now can make all the difference later.
After all, your body deserves the same care you give your garden.
